This is my new birthday jam, or sure. Love the video - channeling a little Olivia Newton-John, are we? Ida No and Johnny Jewel look like they’re ready to bring it again…along with the Chromatics, I remember Glass Candy being among the first rock bands riding the switch from punk to disco…effortlessly and without question. Was this like mid-decade, maybe? Parallel to this, DJs began digging deep into disco crates creating a minor revival, and of course the logical next step was a resurgence in interest in house. Straight boys everywhere are now queuing up at the temple of Frankie Knuckles (do they even know he’s into dudes?), and no pop song goes un-remixed. A widespread resurgence in club culture is evident with new acts like Hercules and Love Affair, MEN, Nite Jewel, and Chicago’s own Gatekeeper and Love Concept looking to disco, house, and industrial/synth classics for inspiration.
Now, with HUGE club-ready albums due from Kelis, Christina Aguilera, and Robyn on the way, it seems like the mainstream has caught on. This summer is ready to usher in a new disco-house decade, and I AM READY. I feel like I could write a whole essay on this but alas, like every other blog post waiting to become a novel, it will have to wait…I have some birthday drinks to consume. L8R
